Combat– Mar'i was trained as an aerial combatant, being able to manoeuvre herself in the air around her opponent while also taking advantage of the fact there is a giant, flaming ribbon of hair streaming behind her. Her aim is exceptional, as she's trained to fire starbolts since childhood. This can extend to use of other weapons such as throwing javelins, but she hasn't had the practice or need to be skilled with projectiles. On her feet, she's great at wrestling out of the grip of her opponent, knowing how to go up against those of greater strength courtesy of her mother and Donna Troy.
Botany/Science - In the words of her father, Mar'i is a "budding botanist" working toward a degree in the field. It is a science that involves taxonomy, biochemisry, molecular biology, genetics, and has great potential in bioengineering toward better environmentally sound products. She's quite familair with identifying organic compounds, and is more than competant applying her knowledge to practical uses.
Efficient Encoder - Mar'i possesses no exceptional IQ as some of her peers in the heroic field do, but part of her success in learning comes from being really good at taking in information and storing it. It's no mind palace, but she will frequently recall relevant information in relation to a case. The environment she's grown up in, among some of the most brilliant and varied people, has provided her an excellent knowledge base. A conversation she might have had with Uncle Victor Stone could lead to recognizing a certain mechanical failure, but only that specific part and nothing else to do with the gadget.
Leadership - Nightstar is the legacy of one of the greatest leaders in the community, Nightwing, and the community recognizes her as a leader of her generation. The title is more formal when she takes charge leading her generation of Titans. Being a leader involves strategic thinking, organization, risk management, resource management, problem solving and delegating tasks among many other challenges.
Language – She can kiss someone with a brain compatible to hers and learn their language. Well, she doesn't have to kiss, as the requirement is 'close contact', but to quote her mom, “It's more fun that way.” Due to being raised by many polyglots, Mar'i knew an impressive amount of languages as a child. English, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Greek, Romani, and Tamaranean to list a few.
Abilities
Powers •
UV Energy– Mar'i absorbs sunlight (UV rays) through her skin which is converted to the energy she needs for her all her powers.
Flight- She's defying gravity.
Hair on Fire – What seems to be a defensive mechanism, a mighty contrail of black and violet flame erupts from her hair when in flight and combat. This streams behind her in flight and while she's usually careful about it, one should take care not to fly close behind her. The faster she flies/more energy she's expending the longer the tail of pretty fire is. This is also fuelled by converted UV energy.
Starbolts – Her primary offensive ability, starbolts are pink rays that are typically shot from her hands in a straight line, although the energy can be distributed across her entire body too. There is a large degree of control for how powerful these beams can be, all dependant on the concentration and amount of energy she puts into it. A large, ultra-hot blast requires heavy amounts of concentrated energy, and would quickly sap her reserves. More typically are 'concussive' beams with low-heat, requiring far less concentrated energy. These beams push enemies back with a force equal enough to the amount of energy being fired; larger starbolts have more force behind them. The starbolts that burn require longer to charge, but at their hottest they easily burn through metal. The most powerful attack of this nature is to simply explode like an erupting star, using all the energy available to her and exploding up to a mile in radius. Only applicable in peak condition or else risk of great personal injury and, in extreme situations, death.
Super-strength - Her muscles may not look that impressive, but they're designed to use the energy from the sun for super-efficiency, allowing a far greater output of strength than the average human. Lifting a couple of tons is standard for her, but in comparison to Kyrptonians, and even Amazonians, her strength is inferior. That, and a half-Tamaranean she is at a slight disadvantage in comparison to other Tamaraneans.
Space-faring - Mar'i can survive space, and doesn't require oxygen to survive (though she does breath on Earth). In the vacuum of space where cosmic radiation allows for greater absorbtion rates, Mar'i can fly in a measure of light-years, allowing travel unassisted by space-craft.
Disease and Poison Resistant - It would take a particularly nasty, likely extraterestrial, virus to get Mar'i sick. Likewise for poisons, which are generally ineffective toward her.
Weaknesses •
Anxiety– It activates the sympathetic-nervous-system, which on top of emotional and mental distress, causes consequences in a fight. The energy she is dependent on for her powers is used up at a much faster rate with less control, making her become quite erratic and dangerous to those around her. Collateral damage is increased ten-fold as her starbolts, stream-of-fire, flight and strength are not kept in check. When exploited, she can be reduced to a vulnerable state where she's spent her energy to critical levels... or that she herself has contributed to the chaos and damage of a villainous endeavour.
Thanatophobia - The fear of death can be a rather debilitating phobia for a superhero who must face the reality of it at a far greater rate than the average citizen. Despite taking many steps toward managing it, she is still susceptible to panic attacks if something greatly triggers her. She depends on team-mates to step in for her should she need to step down as a defender. Therefore, she could not in good conscience ever take the role of a solo hero and is not entirely reliable on her own.
Brainvasion - She has no defense against attacks that target her mind. Telepathy, mood manipulation, illusions, or other influences will work on her just as well, if not be more effective, than the average person. Her emotions are experienced at a greater intensity due to Tamaranean lineage so targeting them is super effective.
Science, not Magic - Mar'i also has no defense against mystic or magical attacks. She also doesn't possess much understanding of how it works, and is not likely to recognize its elements unless she has dealt with it before, or maybe remembers something Avia said... Not like she can do anything with that sort of information anyway unless it's trivia night.
Beakers, not Wrenches - If something is broken, Mar'i's not the person you go to for fixing it. Likely, she's broken it tapping it a bit too hard with that super strength when it's started to annoy her. She just doesn't have the same feeling for inanimate objects.
Not invulnerable – Yes, by human standards Mar'i is incredibly durable. She can withstand most forces that act against her, but her skin is still penetrable. She does take bullet and stab wounds, though they are far less lethal to her than they would be for the average human being. Mar'i can survive an explosion at point blank, as her mother once has before her, but more likely she would not. Even if she did she'd need help fast and would be left incapacitated for potentially months until she healed completely.

PERSONALITY
Likes • Flowers, vegetables, gardening, eco-friendly products and initiatives, romance, performance arts, outdoors, travelling, cuddling, adult humour, feel-good movies, friendly competition, tasteful compliments, femininity, masculinity, and purple in all its shades.
Dislikes • Death, morbid topics, grotesque scenes, insults, tasteless humour, biphobia, bigotry, small dark spaces, and factory farming.
Dreams • To have a career that allows her to help the world through scientific advancements; to have a lasting marriage and a family untouched by tragedy
Fears • Losing a family member, being cheated on, dying, and failure
Overall Personality •
Mar'i Grayson at the heart of her personality is a well-meaning, responsible young woman whose noble intentions are often confounded by anxiety. She's can be hard on the people she's close to, but there's nobody she's harder on than herself. She's disillusioned about the world; never one to believe in things like 'good triumphing over evil', and rather thinks about what she stands to lose. That doesn't mean she's swayed by villainous rhetoric about the hopelessness of the world; Mar'i is still very much a hero with her own moral code, and she's a stubborn one when her mind is set. Despite the existential despair, she will fight on. There is a reverence for life, happiness, and good in the world. She may not be a green lantern, but her willpower stays strong because there is a hope inside her that refuses to give out.
It isn't always easy to stay strong. Her Tamaranean lineage is expressed in a deeply emotional psychology. More than humans, she feels and is influenced by emotions. Her fear, her drive, her love, her anger, are intense, and require more control not to overwhelm her reason. Unfortunately, she is more apt to deal with these emotions like her father—bottling them inside and letting them simmer, rather than talk through them. At her worst, she can be violent, but never to the point that she would let loose her full catastrophic potential. It is usually a short outburst which she immediately feels badly for, and she would feel terrible if someone got hurt because of it.
On the flip-side, these intense emotions can lead to very positive outcomes. She is a very animated person, and enjoys being around others. When she loves someone, be it platonic or otherwise, she pours her heart into her affections. She is passionate, and works hard at her interests giving her much success and motivation in her endeavours. Mar'i's success as a leader is partially because she's very adept at engaging people, being an attentive listener and a charismatic speaker.
Family •
Dick Grayson // Nightwing // Father
Koriand'r // Starfire // Mother
Bruce Wayne // Batman // Adoptive Grandfather
"Honorary Uncles and Aunts" First generation Titans (Uncle Victor Stone, Aunt Donna Troy, Uncle Jericho, Uncle Wally, Uncle Garth, Uncle Garfield, Aunt Raven, etc...)
Overall History •
Mar'i was born in San Fransisco, California: main base of operations for the Titans. The Titans had a big impact on her life and function in many ways as one large extended family. The familial connections with the Titans extended to the children born into it. Lian Harper, and Manotaur are two such individuals she shares a particularly sibling-like relationship. Although her parents, Koriand'r and Dick Grayson, were married with their own apartment, much of her youth was spent at the iconic T-tower. The Titans, and the facilities at the Tower, were pivotal in her early education toward becoming a hero herself.
There was no shortage of expertise to learn from. It wasn't uncommon for Mar'i's education to be supplemented with informal lessons from seasoned heroes. She attended school regularly, but it was her after school activities that would eventually fast-track her through standard education. Aside from academics she was regularly training in combat, particularly in honing her aerial combat as well as her aim. As a young, feminine girl with rich relatives she had opportunities to explore her interests be it dance, or gardening. Being the dubious grand-daughter of Bruce Wayne also introduced her to high-society functions, and most importantly in philanthropic endeavours.
Unfortunately, all was not bright in her childhood. Mar'i was made aware of the death surrounding her family when a classmate of hers spoke about their grandparents—grandparents that Mar'i didn't have. Bruce, Kory, and Dick were all orphaned, and the reality of death and how she could stand to lose people she loved in such a dangerous occupation impacted her greatly. A theme of loss, and abandonment continued when her parents divorced, and Kory left for New Tamaran. Nothing good ever lasted forever, and it led to much anxiety about death and an almost obsessive per-occupation with loss that would follow her into her adult life.
By the time she was sixteen she had earned her highschool diploma, and could begin her career as a superhero in earnest. She became an full-fledged member of the Titans under the name of Nightstar. Her aptitude for leadership, as well as coming up with plans, quickly brought her to her father's position of team leader. It was her vast connections, and her merit, that caught the eye of the heroic community at large. Beyond just her work as a Titan, she was approached from various heroes as her reputation grew. Her best friends, Olivia Queen and Avia, were gained from such opportunities despite a lack of Titan affiliation from either of the heroines.
Thanks to her supplemented courses as a child in many fields, it wasn't difficult for her to balance academics with vigilantism. She took it slowly, with part-time courses in college pursuing a degree in botany. She considers it a fallback career, and is committed to it as an alternative means to help the world.
